CHAPTER TWENTY
Grace had never ridden on the back of a motorcycle before and it was exhilarating. It was also freaking cold! She wore a warm fleece-lined coat with a scarf and gloves, as well as the helmet and she was still freezing! She wrapped her arms around Ghost and held on for dear life. As the vibration of the motor lulled her into comfort, she became more at ease as the ride went on, she relaxed and enjoyed it more and more. Always in front was Gunner and to the rear of their bike was Doc and Zulu.
Grace saw for the first time in the light of day, their little mountain community. There was a quaint main street with small cafes and boutiques, a tiny flower shop, a bakery, and even a salon. She didnât remember much about the mall trip with Doc having hid herself in the back of his SUV, but she would remember this.
She could see that that town was preparing for fall festivals and that made her heart sing. This was the type of community sheâs always wanted to live in. As they passed people on Main Street, hands raised in a friendly wave and Grace felt what she already knewâ¦these men were respected by the community.
The bikes pulled into the medical building parking lot and found spots as close to the door as was available. Ghost held out his hand to help Grace off the back of the bike, and then took her helmet securing it inside the locked container.
âThat was amazing!â she said smiling at them. âThat was so much fun! I canât wait until we can go for a long ride in the summer.â
âIâm glad you liked it Gracie girl,â said Gunner. âIâll stay down here with the bikes while you guys go up.â He nodded at Ghost, and Grace wondered why he would need to stay with the bikes. Too nervous to think of anything other than her visit, she simply followed Doc, Ghost holding her hand.
âSo, Grace, this doctor has been a therapist for about ten years now. She specializes in women who have endured traumatic events. I donât know her personally but an old buddy of mine from the Army said she was top notch.â
âI trust you Doc,â she said biting her lip. âIâm just really nervous.â
âI know you are Gracie girl, but she just needs to get this big visit done and then sheâll come out and see you. I think it has something to do with hospital policy, since sheâs affiliated with Mountain General.â Grace nodded again and as the elevator doors opened, they stepped down the hallway to a small office.
The waiting area only had four seats, so it was good that Gunner had stayed downstairs. She pressed the button by the door as indicated and watched it light up. Taking her seat, she gripped Ghostâs fingers as if she were falling down a black hole.
âItâs okay baby girlâ¦Iâm here.â He kissed her forehead and she smiled, nodding again.
